Following previous surgery in March 2020 by Mr Edward Dawe on my right foot following an infection, I was confident and delighted for him to remove a bunion and and rheumatoid arthritis nodules from my left foot in August 2021. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr Dawe is a highly skilled and sensitive surgeon for anyone in need of such technical intervention. I am very pleased to recommend him and the team at The Nuffield Hospital in Chichester for anyone seeking any advice about foot or ankle ailments. Mobility is such an important subject for our individual independence for all of us and at any age. Mr Dawe provides exceptional pre and post operation advice & care which develops great confidence for anyone considering his services.

Mr Dawe is an excellent surgeon and his patient care is incredible. I cannot thank Mr Dawe enough, not only for the excellent surgery he carried out on both of my feet (bunions) but for the whole patient experience from the first consultation appointment through to my final review appointment. I elected to have surgery on both feet at the same time and experienced very little, if any, post operative pain or discomfort. The surgery site healed quickly and I have full (and better) mobility. Prior to the surgery I could walk for around 10 minutes before feeling pain. Today I have walked for just over 2 hours. If you are contemplating surgery, I highly recommend Mr Dawe.

I had severe arthritis in my talonavicular joint. Mr Edward Dawe was very helpful in discussing the process of operating on my foot (bone fusion). He was very patient on a number of occasions whilst talking through my indecision. He is always very easy to communicate with. Nearly eight months after the operation I can walk well and my foot continues to become more flexible so that even slightly uneven ground is becoming less of a problem. Mr Dawe was careful to explain to me that it will take 18 months for my foot to reach its optimum recovery state. I am definitely working towards that.

Since the first lockdown my wife and I had seriously increased the amount of walking we were doing but by about April this year the pain and discomfort from my bunions made long walks impossible and I was having to wear footwear two sizes too big. I booked a private appointment with Mr Dawe and he agreed that one bunion in particular was indeed very large. My wife and I had a long consultation with Mr Dawe. We felt unhurried throughout and he explained the procedures and options thoroughly and clearly and said he could either operate on both feet at the same time or, as was more popular, one at a time allowing time to heal between operations. He also explained that the surgery could be arranged through the NHS. As I was particularly keen to be back on my feet as normally as possible by September, and I am now retired, I elected to have surgery on both feet on 5th July privately at the Nuffield in Chichester. The operation was a great success and after six weeks I was back walking over a mile at a time and now, after nine weeks, thanks to the follow up physiotherapy which is included I intend to increase my mileage steadily. I am also able to swim a mile again already of non-stop crawl which is not too bad for a 70 year old post op. I had every confidence in Mr Dawe from the outset and I am pleased to say my confidence was not misplaced. Private bunion surgery is not cheap but with very long waiting lists for NHS surgery I personally feel it was money well spent. Would I recommend having both feet operated on at the same time? Yes provided you are fairly fit and have the assistance of a caring and patient partner/carer living with you. I would recommend exercising to get fit prior to the operation if you are able, as you will be somewhat immobile for a while afterwards. Is it painful? Yes there is post op pain as there are so many nerve endings in the feet and though I elected to use very few painkillers they are available to those with a lower pain threshold. I have had two follow up appointments with Mr Dawe and another is scheduled for four months time. I have had two sessions of physio with another this week (all included) and I am driving again without any problems. I would thoroughly recommend Mr Dawe and his excellent team to anybody deciding that they wish to have private surgery at a time to suit them and when they can allow recovery time to suit also.

Mr Dawe performed a fusion and bone graft to my right foot 3 months ago. His friendly, reassuring manner put me at ease immediately. I felt able to ask any questions that I needed to and they were answered fully and clearly. I never felt that I was being rushed. Each stage of the post op treatment was explained to me so I knew exactly what to expect. My recovery after the surgery was remarkably pain free. I am so pleased with the outcome of the operation and can't praise Mr. Dawe's expertise highly enough.
